Fun and laid-back, the Ladder is very informal with no club fees or dues. The only financial obligation is paying for court time if you and your partner decide to play indoors and a can of new balls for each match. Open to adults of all ages, players can challenge or play matches as often as they like.

In or out?

"I’d like to call your shot out, but I don’t have the nerve to do it myself. Please become my accomplice in helping me cheat you."

How often do you and an opponent disagree on line calls? Is there someone you play that is worse than others making the correct call when the ball bounces on or near the line?

More annoying are the players who take an eternity to make a line call. It's like they need to convince themselves while they walk over to pick up the ball they missed first that whatever they are about to say is accurate. If takes that long to decide, you know the ball was likely landed in the box. But, as experience has taught you, you know they will call it out because their overriding need to win is greater than their sense of fairness.

Conversely, there is nothing but love for the player who snaps their head back, eyes rolled, after your ball - the one they decided not to take a swing at and let go out - pummels the back line or strikes inches inside the court. Who can hate the racquet droppers and the tossers who let their sticks sail to your cloaked amusement after watching the ball bounce good in front of them.

Joel Drucker over on the Tennis Channel has his own views in this classic article below.

Portable line judge on the market, under $200

"French inventor GrĂ©goire Gentil has designed a $200 GoPro-size device that can be fastened to any net post and detect whether balls are in or out with surprising accuracy. It’s called, reasonably enough, the In/Out. " ~ Bloomberg Businessweek

Registration for 14th Annual Indoor Tournament now open

While you won't get a chance to knock Stan Wawrinka or Rafa out title contention, this year's 14th Annual Indoor Tournament will be held February 17-19 at the Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign. It will be a lot cheaper serving bombs and ripping forehand winners to the corners here than flying to Rotterdam to play in the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament held the same week.

Open to competitors of all ages, the Indoor Tournament features six division for juniors players and 12 adult divisions. The entry fee for singles player is just $30 and $40 for doubles competitors. Entry forms (download yours here) must be received by the Champaign Park District no later than 5pm on February 14.

Yuri Sohn, who is also the head teaching pro at Dodds, explained The Indoor Tournament was created years ago to give surrounding area high school boys match play practice leading into their upcoming high school season. Now expanded event offers the opportunity for men, women and doubles players of all ages to gauge their level of play with a new spring season on the horizon.

"(For) adults and juniors alike a great opportunity to test their skills in a tournament setting at a very affordable price indoors during the winter,” Sohn said. “You will gain valuable experience in competing under pressure that is unique to a tournament."

Every player will be guaranteed at least two matches. Tournament scoring will be no-ad for main draw matches with third set tiebreakers. Consolation matches will use no-ad scoring and play an eight game pro set.

With dozens of leagues year round in Champaign-Urbana, the tournament does draw its share of seasoned players from the Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding area, but provides a great learning experience for players just getting their feet wet in competitive tennis.

"This particular tournament is perfect for first timers because it is not USTA sanctioned," Sohn said. "You may not have to compete against the hardened tournament players that are chasing points for rankings."

The draws will be announced on the champaignparks.com website after 5pm on Thursday, February 16. Interested players can download the entry form at https://champaignparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Indoor-Tournament-2017-fillable.pdf
